My Linux-based IPCop firewall / router has been online for 34 days without interruption. Pretty amazing to witness coming from a system that’s over 12 years old.

IPCop Online For 29 Days
Tuesday, June 5th, 2012My IPCop Linux firewall has been online for 29 days without any issues or problems. Personally, I think that’s amazing since the computer I use and depend on is over 12 years old. I wrote a post about that computer, IPCop and how to build a Linux router out of an old computer a few weeks ago. If you’re interested in learning more about IPCop or building your own Linux router or firewall, you should check out that post.
IPCop is much more than an Linux distribution firewall. For me, it’s a proxy server, router and portal into my network via remote access. It’s a pretty cool operating system, and it comes packed with tons of community-based support. Anyway, here’s to 29 days of being online. (more…)

Ubuntu — Traitors of Linux, Open Source Software and The Community: Is Ubuntu Becoming Too Commercialized?
Saturday, January 14th, 2012What do you think? Is Ubuntu becoming too commercialized? Now featured on Ubuntu’s website: Ubuntu TV. It looks pretty cool, but that’s not what this is about. I want opinions. I want to know what you think. For me, it was Ubuntu that pulled me away from depending on –and actively using– commercialized software. And now, I am questioning if Ubuntu has become a traitor.
Linux: the concept of using open source software. The vision of being able to use a computer efficiently and effectively without having a dependency on Microsoft software. After many years of having this ‘fatal attraction’ it was Ubuntu that enabled this fantasy become a reality. (more…)

How To Install HP Printer Drivers on Linux?
Wednesday, August 31st, 2011
Linux has come a long way over the years. Installing, customizing, and using Linux as your full time and primary operating system hasn’t been any easier than now. I can see there being issues with figuring out how to install printer drivers on your newly installed Linux system. Here’s the great news if you own a HP printer.
Installing HP printer drivers on Linux is actually very easy to do. Of all the printer manufactures, HP has the best support site for Linux users. If you have a HP printer that you want to install on your Linux system, be sure to check out their site. Installing your HP printer on your Linux system is practically automatic.

Download Linux Mandriva 2011 (Hydrogen)
Wednesday, August 31st, 2011
Last week when I was going nuts downloading and installing many of the different Linux distributions I came across Mandriva but decided to wait to download and install it because the 2011 version, code name Hydrogen, was about to be released.
Well now it’s available and I am excited to download, install, and try it. I haven’t used Mandriva Linux since it was originally called Mandrake Linux. And that was quite a few years ago. (more…)

How To Play Old DOS Games Using Linux?
Wednesday, August 31st, 2011
If you have been wanting to play old DOS computer games but can’t figure out an easy way to do it the solution is actually pretty simple. If you happen to be a Ubuntu or Debian Linux user, there is a DOS emulator program you can easily install called DOSbox Emulator.
The program is simple to install, simply open terminal and type: sudo apt-get install dosbox and then you’re off to playing your old DOS games from ten, twenty years ago. DOSbox Emulator works on many other Linux distributions as well; however, the installation process will be slightly different. (more…)

Do you ever install Windows 3.11 for kicks?
Friday, August 5th, 2011Every once in awhile I like to install Microsoft Windows 3.11 on a super fast computer just to remind me of how much technology has grown in such s short period of time.
Usually when I install Windows 3.11 I’m bored and have nothing better to do with my insomniac hours. I go thru the entire process of updating, tweaking, and patching things together to see if I can get the OS to go online.
Do you do this too from time to time? Seriously, I’m not the only one right?
